LENNY KRAVITZ EXTRA9-6-00
On Monday I had off so I slept in. At 6pm, this cool Jamacian via Long Island artist friend of mine named MS. KIM called. Kim won tickets to be an extra in a Lenny Kravitz video, in a KRock radio promotion (KRock is the big NY radiostation). Was on her way in from Long island, and was stuck in traffic, and was supposed to be at the KRock studios at 6 so she figured she would miss it, and decided since she was going to be in the city anyway why not hang out with me and have some dinner.
So I went back to sleep. I woke up 5 minutes to seven, and called her back. To my suprise, she got the tickets (plural) and said If I can make it down to the Limelight by 7:00 (The Limelight is a cool club which is functioning out of the shell of a converted old church) I can have the other ticket.
So I threw on some clothes and shot down there in a cab. Lenny Kravitz is pretty cool, and considering his track record with videos, this could be fun. We are ushered in, on these long lines of kids. There are signs on the walls warning that if you enter the premises, you may be on MTV's "Making the Video." Hence the other set of camera crews interviewing people in line. Mind you, I had just woken up 10 minutes earlier.
Next thing I know, I'm in a crowd of about 100-150 people crammed in the main room, and Lennie Kravitz is on stage lipsinking to a new song. But the cool thing is something fucks up, a lighting rig the playback machine or something, and they can't keep doing the song, so while the people are fixing it Lennie and his band play a whole set of his greatest hits live, and if you don't know,The Limelight is a tiny venue, you'd never get to see someone of his caliber that close up, so it was a crazy time.
I watched the video a month later when it got Mtv airtime, and guess what? I got LEFT ON THE CUTTING-ROOM FLOOR!
So that was my laborday weekend.
Just another day in the life of an Art Juggernaut.
